The history of Chinese poetry can be divided into three main periods: ancient times, characterized by folk songs in simple, repetitive forms, the classical period of the Han Dynasty to the Qing Dynasty, which saw a proliferation of various forms, and finally the modern period characterized by free verse of Western influence.
